Faith No More is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California. The group emerged from a series of early incarnations beginning in 1979, initially performing under the names Sharp Young Men and later Faith. No Man. Their sound blends elements of alternative metal, funk, and experimental rock, gaining mainstream attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The band is noted for frequent lineup changes, especially in vocalists, before stabilising with a core of bassist Billy Gould, keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Roddy Bottum, and drummer Mike Bordin. Their most commercially successful period featured vocalist Mike Patton and guitarist Jon Hudson, a lineup that persisted through their 2015 reunion album.
Formation and Backstory
The original ensemble began in 1979, with early members experimenting under the moniker Sharp Young Men. By September 1983 the group adopted the name Faith. No Man, a precursor to the final band name.
Founding members Billy Gould (bass), Roddy Bottum (keyboards/rhythm guitar), and Mike Bordin (drums) have been involved since the band's inception, providing continuity through numerous personnel shifts. The final, most recognized lineup consisted of Gould, Bottum, Bordin, guitarist Jon Hudson, and vocalist/lyricist Mike Patton.
Style and Influences
Faith No More’s music is characterised by a hybrid of heavy metal riffs, funk grooves, and avant‑garde experimentation. Their willingness to juxtapose aggressive guitar work with melodic vocal lines and unconventional song structures set them apart from contemporaries.
The band’s eclectic approach drew on influences ranging from classic rock and punk to hip‑hop and progressive metal, contributing to a sound that defied easy categorisation and helped shape the alternative metal genre.
